Respiration workshop
Respiration is a basic survival skill, but good respiration techniques and controlled breathing are also crucial for the development of speech, feeding, posture and nervous system function.
This 2½ hr workshop will focus on the development and practice of 3-dimensional breathing.
3-dimensional breathing patterns require efficient, co-ordinated sucking and swallowing functions in order to avoid aspiration of foreign substances.
When all 3 components are working properly, the following changes may be observed:
- Improved postural control;
- development of bilateral motor coordination;
- better trunk alignment/control;
- emergence of rotational movement patterns;
- more active core musculature;
- improved spatial orientation;
- heightened body awareness;
- greater central stability, resulting from a more defined sense of ‘midline’.
In addition, the way we breathe has a profound effect on our nervous system. Brain Cells require at least three times more oxygen than other body cells. By regulating the breath and increasing oxygenation to the brain cells, we help to strengthen and vitalize the somatic & autonomic nervous systems. Abdominal breathing and stronger breath opens the chest cavity, encouraging more oxygen to the brain.
In this workshop, participants will learn:-
* strategies to encourage 3-dimensional breathing, by palpating the diaphragm; * simple exercises to encourage opening the chest cavity; * Games, songs and fun methods to encourage children to breathe "correctly".
Who would benefit from attending this workshop?
Parents and carers of children with physical challenges, teachers of children with cerebral palsy, speech therapists, physiotherapists,
The Faciliator, Fezia Tyebally, has a Diploma in Biodynamic Cranio-Sacral Therapy and is trained in Aquatherapy. She has done various courses for special needs children in sensory integration, motor planning, auditory therapy and Watsu. She is a trained para-counselor, the mother of a ‘special’ child, and a trained & expereinced Kundalini Yoga Teacher. Fezia weaves her various specializations together for a comprehensive treatment of each of her clients. She runs a private practice (Amir’s Gym) in Kuala Lumpur and regularly presents workshops in Beijing, Hangzhou, Zheng Zhou in China, Jakarta, Medan and Singapore. Fezia is a regular international speaker at conferences on Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome and Autism.
